Review of Ponniyin Selvan: The year is 1001. When crown prince Aditha Karikalan (Vikram), his younger brother Arulmozhi Varman (Jayam Ravi, the title character), and their ailing father Sundar Chola (Prakash Raj) are put in various situations, the Chola empire is the target of plots and intrigues. In order to protect the palace from existential threats, the first of them, who is absent from the kingdom, sends a warrior-messenger named Vallavaraiyan Vanthiyathevan (Karthi) to meet his father and younger sister Kundavi (Trisha). The courier must stop a variety of plotters’ nefarious schemes from coming to fruition.
The incumbent is the target of intense scheming by Periya Pazhuvettarayar (Sarath Kumar) and Chinna Pazhuvettarayar (R Parthiban). Nandini, Periya’s stunning wife (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), has joined them. Madhurantaka (Rehman) aspires to be great. The rest of the movie is about what Aditha and Arulmozhli do next to protect their dominance.
Vallavaraiyan Vanthiyathevan serves as the plot’s heart in the first half, supplying the narrative direction in quite daring ways. In the first hour, Aditha only occasionally but purposefully makes a presence. It takes Arulmozhi a good hour to make a big impression. Once that occurs, the film’s narrational prowess has fully developed.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s Nandini, a Pazhuvoor queen, features a few layered parts. Her elegant performance enhances the persona she portrays. The stakes are raised by Trisha’s persona. If you take into account the potential outcomes of the second edition, which will be published in 2023, she makes for a striking character.
The seductive story ends in (un)anticipated ways. The story is told in delicious ways as the camera pans around the scenery. The opening scenes of the Telugu version feature narration by Chiranjeevi.
